To provide a dye that can reliably and efficiently absorb light in a wide wavelength region, and to provide a method for producing the dye.
The dye is composed of a first dye and a second dye absorbing light in different wavelength regions from each other, in which the first dye and the second dye are chemically bonded by a covalent bond. The first dye is a metal complex dye or an organic dye. The metal complex dye is selected from a group consisting of ruthenium complex dyes, osmium complex dyes, copper complex dyes, rhenium complex dyes and iron complex dyes. The organic dye is a predetermined triphenylamine dye or a predetermined coumarin dye. The second dye is a macrocyclic compound comprising linked nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. The macrocyclic compound has one of porphyrin skeleton, phthalocyanine skeleton and naphthalocyanine skeleton, having a metal atom coordinated in the center of the skeleton.
