To acquire an edge treatment method for a sheet metal material, which can easily obtain a desirably-crushed edge face, by preventing the sheet metal material from shifting laterally during swaging work.
The sheet metal material 5 having the sheared part formed by shearing work is sandwiched between an upper die 10 and a lower die 6 to crush the edge portion grown in a sheared part. In the proximity of an edge deformation inducing part 7 arranged in the bottom of the cavity of lower die 6, a lateral force is generated when the sheet metal material 5 is pressed between the upper die 10 and the lower die 6. A step deformation 16 is performed on an edge portion of sheared part of the sheet metal material 5 by a lateral shifting restriction means 15 provided in the upper die 10 and the lower die 6. The edge crushing is carried out by the edge deformation inducing part 7 while the lateral force is blocked by the stepped part.
