To realize a rate of change of one or less field period.
When a control signal for a diaphragm adjustment, for example, is varied from the current diaphragm adjustment value (±VX1) to a larger value (±VY1) (in a case of increasing transmittance of a positive liquid crystal and decreasing transmittance of a negative liquid crystal), a period for which the value (±VZ1) is further larger than the large value (±VY1) is provided in-between. And the potential (energy) of this large value (±VZ1) and its duration are determined according to a preset value.
