PURPOSE: To improve luminance contrast at a display surface, by cutting off radiation light accompanying electric discharge from the display surface by providing an auxiliary electric discharge cell whose display surface for the initial electric charge formation is blackcoated.
CONSTITUTION: Cathodes 4 and display anodes 7 are provided alternately and in parallel with each other and in separation at predetermined intervals on the inner surface of either of the back surface base 1 and the front surface base 2, and auxiliary anodes 8 meeting at right angles with base plate side electric charges 4, 7 are provided in parallel with each other and in separation at predetermined intervals on the inner surface of the other base, and a display electric discharge cell 5 is formed by arranging a cathode 4, a display anode 7 and an auxiliary anode 8 in each electric discharge cell 5, and the insides of calls 5 adjoining anodes 8 are connected to each other by forming openings 3d at the wall portion of a sealing wall 3c in parallel with cathodes 4 and anodes 7. Also, an auxiliary electric discharge cell 5A whose exclusive purpose is to conduct 'kindling', is formed by providing only a cathode on the opposite side base opposite to the uppermost position of a linear order scanning 'write' that is in a direction meeting at right angles with anodes 8, and conducting the blackcoating of the display surface side. As a result, the improvement of luminance contrast of the display surface is realized.
