To provide a small-sized electric furnace which can be used reliably even at a temperature of more than 1400°C while exhibiting excellent properties in terms of durability, economy, handling and the like.
An electric furnace comprises a both open-ended hollow ceramics substantially made of lanthanum chromite, wherein the cross sectional area taken on a plane perpendicular to a lengthwise direction at both ends of the tubular ceramics is made greater than the cross sectional area taken on a plane perpendicular to a lengthwise direction at the central portion of the tubular ceramics, thus forming terminal portions 2 at the both ends thereof. An electrode 4 for high temperature use and a metal lead wire 5 are mounted to each terminal 2. An exothermic body 1 is formed between the terminals 2. An insulating material 7 is disposed around the outside of the exothermic body 1, while a hollow ceramics 6 is mounted in a hollow space defined in the exothermic body 1. The inside of the hollow ceramics 6 is used as an effective heating chamber.
