To provide an electric motor and an electric generator having a number of sub motors that can operate independently with one another, in particular, an in-wheel electric motor and an in-wheel electric generator.
An electric motor 40 includes a stator having two coil sets 60 arranged to produce a magnetic field of the motor 40; and two control devices. The first control device is coupled to a plurality of coil sub-sets 61, 62, and 63 for the first coil set, and the second control device is coupled to a plurality of coil sub-sets 61, 62, and 63 for the second coil set. Each control device is arranged to control current in the respective plurality of coil sub-sets 61, 62, and 63 to generate a magnetic field in each coil sub-set to have a substantially different magnetic phase to the other one or more coil sub-sets 61, 62, and 63 in the respective coil set 60. The first control device and the second control device are mounted adjacent to the stator.
