To provide an electric rotating machine which is capable of facilitating and automatizing fitting work of a surge absorbing element to a commutator and has excellent workability and reliability in connecting work.

This electric rotating machine is provided with a commutator 14 involving a plurality of commutator pieces 14a and an annular surge absorbing element 16 which is positioned so as to surround the outer circumference of the commutator 14 and has an electrode 40 on the outer-periphery surface. Each of the commutator pieces 14a involves a commutator body 15, a riser part 20 extending from the commutator body 15 so that the surge absorbing element 16 may be placed thereon, and a connection part 23 formed so as to extend from the riser part 20. The connection part 23 is close to and faces the electrode 40 on the outer-periphery surface of the surge absorbing element 16 and is conductively connected with the electrode 40. The connection part 23 involves a first bending surface part 25 and a second bending surface part 27, thereby clamping the winding of an armature coil between them.
