Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optic optical SSB(single sideband) modulator and optical frequency shifter having cyclic domain inversion structure whose structure is simple, whose adjustment is easy also, which operates at the high frequency of 1 GHz to 100 GHz, whose size is small, which has high efficiency and which can be driven with small power.
SOLUTION: This optical modulator and optical frequency shifter uses an electro-optic crystal which is applied with cyclic polarity inversion structure in which spatial arrangement of polarities are shifted by 1/4 cycle each other and is made to have structure in which the electro-optic crystal is combined with Mach-Zehnder interferometer waveguides 3 and traveling-wave electrodes 5. Then, the modulator and shifter can perform the operation of a sin-modulation and a cos-modulation only by supplying a modulation signal 8 from a power feeding circuit.
