PURPOSE: To obtain a display device of fast decoloring and coloring speeds and of a long llfe by using the specific compound having OH groups for an org. solvent in a display device using the soln. comprising an electrochromic (EC) material, supporting electrolyte and organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: In an EC display device which is provided with display electrodes 2 and a counter electrode 5 on transparent glass substrates 1, 1, respectively, and formed with a display layer 3 via a spacer 4, 3,3-dimethyl-2-(para-dimethylaminostyryl)indolino[1,2W6]oxazoline or the like is used for the EC material, and the soln. comprising electrolyte (tetrabutyl ammonium perchlorate or the like), the compound having the OH groups shown by formulas IWIV, and a solvent selected from cyclohexanol, methyl cyclohexanol and benzyl alcohol is sealed as the display layer 3. In this way, the contrast and the stability of operation are improved.
