PURPOSE: To obtain the titled element not causing short-circuit between electrodes by forming an electrochromic material layer made of a transition metal and an ion conductive material layer, and a specified proton producing material layer between electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: An transparent electrode 2; an electrochromic material layer 3 made of a transition metal oxide, such as WO3; an ion conductive material layer 4 contg. a pigment, such as TiO2, when needed; a proton producing material layer 5 made of hydroquinones, such as binaphthal, or quinhydrones, such as benzoquinone, and an opposite electrode layer 6 are laminated on a substrate 1. The electrochromic display element thus obtained is good in adhesion to the layer 3, high in speed of response to development erasion of color, not producing hydrogen even after long time use, and not deteriorated in display function by change of environmental humidity.
