For an electrode material of an electrochemical capacitor, conventional active carbon is not employed, but rather, conductive non-oxide ceramics having an internal resistance lower than the active carbon is employed, where the conductive non-oxide ceramics containing at least one is selected from among a group consisting of carbides, nitrides, borides, and silicides of Ti (titanium), Zr (zirconium), Hf (hafnium), V (vanadium), Nb (niobium), Ta (tantalum), W(tungsten), Mo (molybdenum), Fe (iron), Ni (nickel) and Cr (chromium). According to this electrode material an electrochemical capacitor that has a low internal resistance is provided.
