To provide an electrode for a fuel cell high in catalyst efficiency by providing a catalyst layer, containing the carbon fiber together with the catalyst, a water repellent, a solid polymer electrolyte on the surface of a porous base body to allow the solid components in the catalyst layer to be entangled with the carbon fiber and to prevent the solid components from entering the porous base body.
A catalyst layer is provided on a surface of a porous base body of a gas diffusion layer, such as carbon paper to obtain an electrode for a fuel cell. The catalyst such as the solid polymer electrolyte and platinum-carried carbon, the water-repellent such as polytetrafluoroethylene polymer, and the carbon fiber are contained in the catalyst layer. The catalyst layer is formed by uniformly mixing and diffusing the solid particles and carbon fiber in the solvent such as ethyl alcohol, and applying the solution to the surface of the porous base body, which is preferably treated with the water repellent in advance, and drying the applied solution. At this time, the solid particles are entangled with the carbon fiber to prevent the porous base body from flowing into pores of the porous base body. The gas diffusion property of the porous base body is kept high, and the utilization efficiency of the catalyst is improved.
