To provide an electrode for generating hydrogen which is used for an electrochemical process and is an electrode for generating hydrogen in a process such as hydrogen generation in alkaline or acidic aqueous solution, industrial electrolysis such as pure water electrolysis using an ion exchange membrane or a process for a hydrogen absorbent and can be used even in zero gap in an electrolytic cell using large current density and has an inexpensive novel metal catalyst.
The electrode for generating hydrogen has a hydrogen adsorbing layer comprising an oxide containing at least one kind of an element selected from Pd, Ta, Nb, Ti, Ni, Zr and lanthanum based metals or carbon, formed on a catalytic layer formed on the surface of a conductive base material. The generation of hydrogen is efficiently carried out by allowing the hydrogen adsorbing layer to promote the adsorption and desorption of hydrogen.
