Title:
ELECTRODE-LESS DISCHARGE LAMP
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3280399
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To facilitate a start.
CONSTITUTION: An induction coil 2 is wound on the outer periphery a bulb 1 made of a translucent material and sealed with discharge gas. High-frequency current is fed to the induction coil 2 by the first high-frequency power source 4a, and the high-frequency magnetic field is applied to the discharge gas sealed in the bulb 1 to excite the discharge gas for luminescence. A unipolar auxiliary electrode 3 is arranged on the bottom face of the bulb 1, and high-frequency voltage is applied across the ground and the auxiliary electrode 3 from the second high-frequency power source 4b. A stripe-like preliminary discharge with a free end at one end is generated by the high-frequency electric field around the auxiliary electrode 3, and the transition to an arc discharge by the high-frequency magnetic field around the induction coil 2 is facilitated. The second high-frequency power source 4b sets the output voltage so that the amplitude of the high-frequency voltage applied to the auxiliary electrode 3 against the ground is made sufficiently large.
