To improve contrast by reducing light leakage on an outer peripheral part (an edge part) of an inclined electrode pattern in an IPS liquid crystal display element.
The IPS liquid crystal display element has pattern structures formed by making respective interdigital electrodes 2 and signal wires 1 inclined in mutually parallel dog leg shapes wherein the interdigital electrodes 2 are composed of pixel electrodes and common electrodes in a pixel region containing a plurality of signal wires and scanning wires arranged nearly in a matrix, TFT switching elements arranged on respective intersections of the signal wires and the scanning wires, the interdigital pixel electrodes connected to the TFT switching elements and the interdigital common electrodes formed so as to go into engagement with the pixel electrodes. Outer peripheral shapes of the interdigital electrodes 2 and the signal wires 1 formed in the dog leg shapes are constructed with fine steps of staircase shapes wherein the respective steps are constructed with two edges in X- and Y-directions with respect to an optic axis.
