To provide an electrode wire with less disconnection frequency and improved machining speed during the electric discharge machining.
The electrode wire for wire electric discharge machining is formed by applying a spot-like insulating film (a metal oxide film or the like) 3 with a size of 1-50,000 square micrometers on the surface of a conductive metal wire into a mottled state. Preferably, the electrode wire is composed such that the conductivity of the conductive metal wire is ≥8.7 m/(Ωmm2), a copper-zinc alloy is used as a center core-material, and it has a two-layer structure, in which a copper-zinc alloy having higher zinc concentration than that of the copper-zinc alloy center core-material is applied around the center core material. The disconnection frequency can be reduced without affecting contact detection performance such as positioning.
