Abstract:
To provide an electrode that can be manufactured at a low cost by using no platinum group element and can exhibit substantially the same catalytic activity (catalysis) as an electrode containing a platinum group element.SOLUTION: An electrode 10 is made of austenitic stainless steel, ferroalloy, and Cu which are selected so that the composite work function thereof is close to the work function of the platinum group element, and is an alloy-metal transition metal sheet-like electrode having a porous structure obtained by uniformly mixing and dispersing stainless alloy fine powder, ferroalloy fine powder, and Cu metal fine powder to form alloy-metal transition metal fine powder mixture, compressing the alloy-metal transition metal fine powder mixture into a sheet-like shape having a predetermined area and then burning the compressed alloy-metal transition metal fine powder mixture to form many fine channels. In the electrode 10, the weight ratio of the stainless alloy fine powder, the weight ratio of the ferroalloy fine powder, and the weight ratio of the Cu metal fine powder to the total weight of the alloy-metal transition metal fine powder mixture are determined so that the composite work function of the work functions of the stainless alloy fine powder, ferroalloy fine powder, and Cu metal fine powder approximates the work function of the platinum group element.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
