To provide an electrolyte for a fuel cell wherein a gas passage in an electrode catalyst layer is maintained, mass transfer resistance is reduced and the output of the fuel cell is improved when applied to a fuel cell.
The electrolyte comprises a linear polymer having 10,000-2,000,000 weight average molecular weight, and a normal-temperature molten salt. The linear polymer is the one containing 20-100 mol% of a monomer unit having a hydrophobic group based on the whole monomer units, and a polymer containing 20-100 mol% of at least one kind of a monomer unit selected from a maleimide-based monomer and an acrylamide-based monomer is cited as the linear polymer. A salt having an imidazolium derivative, a pyridinium derivative, an ammonium derivative, a phosphonium derivative or an isouronium derivative as a cation component is cited as the normal-temperature molten salt.
