Title:
ELECTROLYZER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH02298288
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enhance the mechanical strength of a cathode and to improve its durability against a high voltage by using a cathode formed by dispersing metal nitride grains in metallic Pd as the electrode of the electrolyzer in which a voltage is impressed on plural electrodes to cause electrolysis. CONSTITUTION:A voltage is impressed on the plural electrodes provided in an electrolytic cell contg. heavy water to electrolyze the heavy water. A cathode formed by dispersing metal nitride grains in metallic Pd is used as the cathode in the electrolyzer. Ti, Zr, Hf, etc., are preferably used as the metals of the nitride grains, the fine grains having about 0.1mum diameter are preferably used, and about 0.1wt.% of the grains is added. Consequently, an electrode having durability even at a high voltage is obtained, and the durability is maintained for a long period even if the electrode occludes a large amt. of the deuterium formed by the electrolysis.
