The electron emission element includes: a substrate; first electrodes spaced apart from one another along one direction on the substrate; second electrodes arranged along the direction between the first electrodes; a third electrode electrically insulated from the first and second electrodes and extending in a direction crossing the direction; and first and second electron emission portions that are formed on side surfaces of the first and second electrodes, respectively. A gap is formed between the first and second electron emission portions that face each other.
