PURPOSE: To provide an image formation device of high display definition for making an image formation member to emit light at a selectively controlled brightness by selecting an optional element according to an input signal and by making the amount of discharged electron controllable.
CONSTITUTION: A surface conduction type emission element connected to a wiring, to which voltage V1 is applied, is scanned by applying the voltage of V1 to a wiring selected of numeral (m) numbers of wirings in X-direction, and voltage V2 to the other wirings, by means of applying a scanning signal. The voltage wave height value Vm of a pulse is changed according to an input signal in relation to the numeral (n) number of wirings in Y-direction, by a modulation signal emitting means, and the brightness of a display image is thus modulated. The drive voltage applied to the elements not scanned is controlled so that it does not exceed the threshold ground voltage Vth of the element. An electron beam of desired intensity is output only from the scanned element, and no electron beam is output from the elements not scanned. By selecting an optional element and by making it to emit light at desired brightness, the display definition of an image is improved.
