PURPOSE: To prevent unevenness occurrence and element deterioration due to noise at the time of driving by applying voltage to conductive films through non-linear elements connected in series in forming process of surface conduction- type electron emitting elements arranged in a lattice-like arrangement.
CONSTITUTION: Non-linear elements 18 having a nonlinear voltage-current characteristic just like that of a diode element are connected in series with conductive films before electron emitting parts of surface conduction-type electron emitting elements 14 are formed, and the non-linear elements 18 are arranged in a lattice- like arrangement. In the resulting body, elements 14 are formed by applying voltage through terminals DY1-DYn in the line direction and terminals DX1-DYm in the row direction and an electron source 3 is composed of a large number of the elements 14 and elements 18 at the time of forming process. At that time, since forming voltage is applied to the conductive films through the elements 18, only desiring films are properly formed and uniform switching properties are provided. Moreover, reverse flow preventive elements having diode properties are used for the elements 18, so that noise components superimposed on input signals are removed.
