An electronic camera comprises: an image pickup element 10; a single lens reflex type finder section FD; a mirror member RM for selectively guiding an image of a subject to the finder section FD or to the image pickup element 10; a display device 17 for displaying an image thereon; an operation means which outputs an operation signal for selecting any one of at least one photographing mode for a still picture and at least one photographing mode for a motion picture; a setting means which sets an internal state of the relevant camera including a switching operation of the mirror member RM to a predetermined state corresponding to the relevant photographing mode in response to the operation signal from the operation means; a storage means for storing the photographing mode for the still picture being set prior to setting the photographing mode for the motion picture; and a control means which controls the setting means, when the photographing mode for the motion picture is set, and a predetermined interruption condition for the photographing mode is established, so as to change the photographing mode into the photographing mode stored in the storage means.
