To provide a photographing composition determining apparatus for an electronic camera, which is capable of detecting longitudinal and lateral compositions without requiring a user to intentionally execute a special operation.
The photographing composition determining apparatus for an electronic camera comprises area sensors 2a, 2b each having a plurality of light-receiving elements and being provided in an area shape so as to correspond to a photographing scene; light-receiving lenses 3a, 3b for introducing an object image to the sensors 2a, 2b; an A/D converter 1a for converting analog signals output from the respective light-receiving elements of the sensors 2a, 2b into digital data; and a CPU 1 for detecting the distribution of luminance and the distribution of distances in the photographing scene on the basis of the digital data output from the converter 1a, and for determining a photographing composition according to the distribution of luminance and the distribution of distances.
