To provide an electronic camera capable of properly acquiring an image for deciding an optimum focal position and extending a coping range of autofocus.
The electronic camera 1 is equipped with a control means 6 deciding an optimum focal position based on a plurality of images picked up by an imaging device 4 while moving a focus lens 2 along an optical axis, and a light source for preliminary light emission 7 emitting light toward a subject when picking up the plurality of images by the imaging device 4. In the electronic camera, the control means 6 is set to change at least either emitted light quantity of the light source for preliminary light emission 7 or a luminance gain of the imaging device 4 corresponding to the position of the focus lens 2 so that it may be smaller from a far point side where the focal position of the focus lens 2 is the farthest to a near point side where it is the nearest or it may be larger from the near point side to the far point side when picking up the image by the imaging device 4.
