To provide an electronic control system and a functional agency method capable of coping with failure of an ECU (electronic control unit) without depending on a specific ECU.
This electronic control system 100 is provided for connecting a first electronic control unit 1 and one or more of second electronic control units A via a network 20. The first electronic control unit has a failure detecting means 36 for detecting failure of the self function and an agency request means 35 for requesting agency of the failure function of causing failure to the second electronic control unit, and the second electronic control unit has: a determining means 42 for determining whether the failure function can be substituted; and agency means 41 and 43 for acting for the functional function when it is determined that the agency can be performed.
