PURPOSE: To simultaneously and easily perform editing in various formats without fail by additionally registering one sentence, which includes document constitution information or the like similar to the editing operation object selected by an operator as a result of retrieval, as a new editing operation object.
CONSTITUTION: The input of a range selecting operation from an input means 10 is received in order to define a part of started document information as an editing object. Based on the obtained input information, the selection range to be the object of editing is decided out of an entire document. Symbolic characters to be frequently used for the leading part of a sentence such as specified symbolic characters included in characters or character strings in the provided selection range are detected. A document memory 11 is retrieved by preparing retrieval conditions based on the detected and stored information. When the character or character string satisfying the retrieval conditions is detected, that character or character string is registered as a candidate for performing the editing operation similar to the character or character string selected as the editing candidate before, and defined as the object of the editing operation. Then, the re-edited document is displayed on a display device 14.
