In this electronic file device constituted of a scanner reading an original, a liquid crystal display(LCD) displaying the image data of the original and an MD(minidisk) data drive recording the image data of the original, the original read by the scanner is classified together with the reduced image into MD data to be a recording medium and is recorded by the MD data drive. When the list of the classification (folder) of the original recorded in this way is displayed, the frames 121A and the names 122 of all the folders are displayed collectively. Next, a reduced image 121B representing each folder is displayed. Next, a selection operation is performed for an already displayed index in process of the display of the reduced image, the display of the reduced image is interrupted and the page (original) that the selected holder has is displayed.
