PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic system for a bicycle, capable of providing at least one operation mode extremely effective from the standpoint of training, and a method for operating the electronic gear shift device of the bicycle.SOLUTION: The method for operating the electronic gear shift device of a bicycle includes (a) the step of receiving a detection signal indicating the heat rate of a driver using the bicycle, (b) the step of receiving a detection signal indicating power provided from the driver, (c) the step of calculating a performance index according to the numerical value of the detection signal indicating the power and the numerical value of the detection signal indicating the heart rate, (d) the step of obtaining a reference value for the performance index, (e) the step of comparing the calculated performance index with the reference value of the performance index, and (f) the step of generating a control signal for the gear shift device according to the result of the comparing step (e).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 12
