In the electrophotographic apparatus that controls the correction of registration for positioning of a toner image of each color, an image detecting means includes: a light emitting means 301 for emitting light to a position through which an image carrier 101 and a registration patch 306 formed on the image carrier pass; and light receiving means 302 and 303 disposed along the direction of the conveyance of the image carrier 101. Light quantity emitted by the light emitting means 301 is adjusted according to a difference between the outputs of the light receiving means 302 and 303 by the image carrier 101 and the outputs of the light receiving means 302 and 303 by the registration patch 306.
