PURPOSE: To easily detect a single failure of a light source by providing a failure judging means which judges the occurrence of a light source failure when both of two kinds of abnormality detection means detect abnormal states and generates a status signal indicating the failure.
CONSTITUTION: A BD abnormality detection means 37 monitors a BD (horizontal synchronizing) signal from a beam detector 28, thereby judging a BD error when a time from the detection of one BD signal to the detection of a next BD signal is out of a specified range. A failure judging means 38 does not judge a laser failure as soon as a laser abnormality detection means 36 detects a laser abnormality, but waits for a while. Meantime, a printing sequence 33 continues a printing action. After that, the failure judging means 38 first judges a laser failure when a BD abnormality is detected by the BD abnormality detection means 37. In addition, a BD failure is judged when the laser abnormality detection means 36 judges a laser normality and the BD abnormality detection means 37 detects a BD abnormality.
