To prevent toner from being transferred and attached onto a second toner- carrying means in the case of unnecessary and to prevent the toner from being attached to a transfer means.
The recorder is quipped with: a developing device provided with a developing roller 14 which holds one-component toner on it and an intermediate roller 17 which abuts on the developing roller 14 and a photoreceptor 1 for holding an electrostatic latent image on it and which forms a toner image by transferring the toner from the developing roller 14 to attach it to itself, thereby attaching the toner to the electrostatic latent image on the photoreceptor 1; and a transfer device 5 which transfers the toner image onto a cut sheet by their contact. At the time of recording- sheet-area-outside-development between the cut sheets, when the plurality of sheets are consecutively inserted, a bias which is applied at least to the developing roller 14 or intermediate roller 17 is changed, and thus the direction of an electric field between the rollers 14 and 17 is made different form that used at the time of recording- sheet-area-development, to recover the toner on the intermediate roller 17 onto the developing roller 14. Further, only when a toner recovering area on the intermediate roller 17 passes through a contact point between the transfer device 5 and photoreceptor 1, a bias which is the same as that used at the time of the recording- sheet-area-outside-development is applied to the transfer unit 5.
