To provide an electrorheological clutch capable of finding a suitable way of coupling an input drive shaft to a clutch without requiring the use of fluid-tight couplings that can cause leakage of an ER fluid and preventing an ER properties from being lost from fluid even if ER particles are settled in the fluid.
This electrorheological clutch is selectively engaged by the application of a voltage to the electrorheological fluid (ER) provided between a cylindrical driven coupling member (4) and a cylindrical drive coupling member (3). The cylindrical driven coupling member (4) and the cylindrical drive coupling member (3) are formed with axially-oriented surfaces which define between axially-oriented spaces for the ER fluid so as to minimize problems with settlement of the ER particles.
