To prevent discharge of negative ions when using an electrostatic atomizer for deodorization in an air conditioner etc., in the electrostatic atomizer for generating charged fine particles (nano mist) by applying high voltage between an atomization electrode and an opposing electrode while supplying water to the atomization electrode.
A control microcomputer 27 generates discharge between the atomization electrode 13 and the opposing electrode 14 with the atomization electrode 13 fully dried without driving the Peltier element 15 for a predetermined time, and detects discharge of negative ions. Then, a displacement device 22 is driven from a drive circuit 28 and the opposing electrode 14 is separated from the atomization electrode 13. After the negative ion discharge is stopped, the Peltier element 15 is made to cool the atomization electrode 13 to generate water droplets and then, electrostatic atomization is performed. Therefore, the electrostatic atomizer is unnecessary for deodorization, and generation of negative ion discharge which causes damage to the atomization electrode 13 can be suppressed.
