To eliminate the need for a cutting work due to formation of a recessed part and a protrusion part when the element of a belt for a continuously variable transmission having a recessed part and a protrusion part is manufactured.
An element is a plurality of elements laminated together in the direction of a sheet to form an annular belt for a continuously variable transmission and provided with a recessed part 21, a protrusion part 22, and a hole 23 formed on one side in the direction of a sheet thickness. The protrusion part 22 is formed on the other side in the direction of a sheet thickness and engaged with the recessed part 21 of an adjoining element 20. The hole 23 is formed in the protrusion part 22. The recessed part 21 and the protrusion part 22 are simultaneously formed by a press work. A hole 23a being the origin of the hole 23 is formed at a process followed by a press work to simultaneously mold the recessed part 21 and the protrusion part 22. The volume of the internal space of the recessed part 21 is larger than that of the protrusion part 22. The internal volume of the hole 23a before a press work is larger than a difference between the volume of the internal space of the recessed part 21 and the volume of the protrusion part 22 containing the hole 23.
