To provide an elevator apparatus that is constituted so that an elevator car stopped between story floors can be arbitrarily moved to either of the nearest upper and lower stories.

The elevator apparatus makes the elevator car 24 moved to the arbitrary story floor by ascendably/descendably installing a movable body 12 including the elevator car 24, in a hoistway 14 vertically passing through sections among the respective story floors of a building 10. The movable body 12 comprises a movement mechanism that enables the elevator car 24 to be moved by up to one distance between the story floors in either of upward and downward directions in the movable body 12 and that enables the elevator car to be stopped in an arbitrary position. The movement mechanism is operated by an operation of an emergency escape button 27, which is provided in the elevator car 24, to move the elevator car 24 to the nearest story floor.
