A control microcomputer 15 of the elevator outputs a control signal for prohibiting input to the power distribution system of phase advance capacitors 4a and 4b to an automatic power factor adjusting machine 5 via a communication cable 17 before putting a contactor 12 in an ON state when a call is registered. The automatic power factor adjusting machine 5 of the building side power distribution system controls so that contactors 2a and 2b are not put in the ON state regardless of the phase of source voltage/electric current when inputting the control signal from the elevator control microcomputer 15. Since the phase advance capacitors 4a and 4b are not inputted to the building side power distribution system when starting operation of the elevator by performing such control, damage of various apparatuses of the elevator caused by spike voltage by input of the phase advance capacitors 4a and 4b, can be prevented.
