To provide an elevator device capable of improving the balance between a car whose boarding area is variable and a balance weight, and reducing consumption of electric power necessary for the operation of the car.
A car of an elevator device has a movable wall that is movable between a first position that defines a first boarding region and a second position that defines a second boarding region which is wider than the first boarding region. A balance weight assembly 5 includes a main weight assembly 40 connected to a rope 4, a sub weight assembly 50 removably attached to the main weight assembly 40, and an attaching and detaching mechanism 60 for attaching/detaching the sub weight assembly 50 to/from the main weight assembly 40. The attaching and detaching mechanism 60 detaches the sub weight assembly 50 from the main weight assembly 40 when the movable wall is located at the first position, and attaches the sub weight assembly 50 to the main weight assembly 40 when the movable wall is located at the second position.
