In this elevator, an emergency stop device is constituted of a gripping mechanism 2 having grip parts 6A, 6B mounted to a car and gripping a guide rail 1, and wedges 14A, 14B moved between the guide rail and a car fixing member by gripping the guide rail with the grip parts of the gripping mechanism 2. The gripping mechanism comprises a press means (7) for applying a pressing force to grip the guide rail, and an electromagnetic actuator 8 for giving or limiting the pressing force of the press means by non-excitation or excitation by an electronic command. Pressing force detection means (13) for detecting the pressing force of the gripping parts onto the guide rail, and gripping force judgment means (19) for comparing the detected pressing force with a reference pressing force for judgment are provided to the gripping mechanism.
