An elevator includes a winding machine 1 equipped with a shaft member 2, a sheave which rotates by rotational driving of the shaft member 2, and a main cable suspended from the sheave. The winding machine 1 includes a rotary body 20 which is a disc-like body fitted to the shaft member 2 and rotating together with the shaft member 2, and has an outer groove 21 formed therein, a braking part 30 having an inner projection part 51 which can move to contact with and separate from the outer groove 21, and is configured to engage with the outer groove 21 when in contact, and an elastic part 60 which holds a stop state of the rotary body 20 by pressing the outer groove 21 by an inner projection part 51 with predetermined force when the inner projection part 51 engages with the outer groove 21.
