To provide an elevator capable of performing a smooth stop, reducing the travel time, and giving a comfortable ride.
The elevator comprises: a hoist; a brake part; a rope parameter estimation part; a viscous force estimation part; and a hoist brake control part. The rope parameter estimation part calculates the length of a rope from position information for the rope and position information for a car which are obtained from rotation of a hoist, calculates the weight of the rope from a load applied to the rope and the weight of the car, and calculates the elastic coefficient of the rope from the length of the rope and the weight of the rope. The viscous force estimation part calculates the coefficient of viscosity corresponding to the viscous force applied to the car from the force applied to the rope, and the position information, speed, and acceleration of the car. The hoist brake control part decides whether the brake part is to be operated or not by actuating the hoist and comparing a value derived from the weight of the car, the acceleration of the car, and the elastic coefficient with a value which is derived from the coefficient of viscosity and becomes greater as the viscous force increases.
