PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emergency braking device capable of slowly and stably stopping stairs, when breakage of a driving chain is detected in an escalator.SOLUTION: An emergency braking device for an escalator includes: a friction plate on an outer periphery of which a friction surface is formed; a brake block to which a brake shoe is attached; a mounting platform on which the brake block is placed; a latch for engaging with a latch part of the mounting platform; a compression spring for pressing the brake block; a rotary shaft to which a shoe lever and a release lever are fixed with a space therebetween; a switch for detecting the descent of the release lever; a hydraulic cylinder for pressing the mounting platform; and a control part for controlling force by which the hydraulic cylinder presses the mounting platform, on the basis of output of the switch. When the driving chain is broken, the shoe lever rotates downward around the rotary shaft as the center, the release lever rotates with the rotation of the shoe lever, thereby releasing the latch from the latch part, and the brake block is pressed by the compression spring, thereby moving on the mounting platform, and pressing the friction plate.
