Abstract:
PURPOSE:To easily fabricate an end face light emitting diode enabling the optical output to be extracted efficiently and the horizontal dispersion to be suppressed by forming the light emitting end face of a light emitting region formed on a semiconductor substrate into the shape of a curved surface having a required curvature. CONSTITUTION:The current applied from an electrode 5 is converted to an optical output in an active layer 3. However, since a light emitting end face 31 has a function as a lens because of the difference in refractive index between the atmosphere and an active layer 3, the optical output does not disperse horizontally but is converged and taken out to the exterior. Accordingly, it can be entered also into a small-diameter fiber efficiently. Further, although a striped mesa was formed on the whole and the end face thereof was made into a semicircle, only the end face may be made into a semicircle.
