To provide an energy absorbing member made of an aluminum alloy extrusion hollow-molded material, which is deformed under prescribed load restriction, excellent in the collision load sensitivity while satisfying characteristics to efficiently absorb the collision energy within a limited deformation stroke, and whose cross section is polygonal.
The energy absorbing member is composed of the aluminum alloy extrusion hollow-molded material 10 whose cross section is polygonal. The energy absorbing member is configured to selectively change the length of respective sides 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 constituting the polygon in the axial direction of the extrusion hollow-molded material so that the number of present sides is gradually reduced toward the distal end 13 side of the extrusion hollow-molded material. Collision of the body of an automobile is detected by the compression deformation of the extrusion hollow-molded material, and the collision load sensitivity when an air bag is operated is improved.
