Abstract:

PURPOSE: To stably absorb collision energy so as to prevent a bad influence to an occupant, by providing a V groove with a V-shaped shaft section in an end part of an FRP cylinder over a total periphery of the end part, also providing a protrusion part engaged with the V groove in a cover unit.
CONSTITUTION: When impact force is applied in an axial direction of an energy absorbing member, an end part of an FRP cylinder 2, decreasing the thickness by forming a V groove 5, serves as a trigger of destrucion to start collapsing the FRP cylinder 2 from a side of a cover unit 3. Here by pressing force of a protrusion part 6 of the cover unit 3, a creak 8 is generated in a point end of the V groove 5, and broken pieces 9, 10, press divided inward/outward by the successively press advanced protrusion part 6, are once brought into contact with the cover unit 3 to be advanced while curling. Since a lower surface of the cover unit 3 is made flat to provide no object protruded downward, press spreading the FRP cylinder 2 by blinding partly with the broken pieces 9, 10 is prevented. Consequently, the FRP cylinder 2 is stably collapsed, and an excellent characteristic can be displayed as the collision energy absorbing member.
