To provide an engine combustion control device with comparative ease and successfully controlling self-ignition combustion of an air-fuel mixture, improving fuel economy, and suppressing harmful matter emissions.
An engine is operated in a laser ignition combustion operation mode according to an operating condition for igniting and burning the air-fuel mixture in a cylinder by a laser light irradiated by a laser ignition device and a self-ignition combustion operation mode for burning the air-fuel mixture by self-ignition by compression. A laser irradiation condition changing means enlarges an irradiation area of the laser light irradiated from the laser ignition device to the air-fuel mixture in comparison with a period in the laser ignition combustion operating mode when switching from the laser ignition combustion operating mode to the self-ignition combustion operating mode.
