To ensure the drive of a fuel injection valve at the time of restarting by restraining excessive increase of fuel pressure when a fuel pressure regulating means breaks down in the state of increasing the fuel pressure.
This engine control device includes: an automatic stop/restart means 20 for automatically stopping an engine when an automatic stop condition is established and restarting the engine when a restart condition is established during automatic stop. The device further includes: a fuel pressure regulating means for regulating the fuel pressure to a required fuel pressure; a failure detecting means 20d for detecting that the fuel regulating means breaks down on the side of increasing the pressure of fuel; and an automatic stop regulating means 20e for regulating automatic stop even if the automatic stop condition is established when the failure detecting means 20d detects a failure of the fuel pressure regulating means. Accordingly, when the fuel pressure regulating means breaks down on the side of increasing the pressure of fuel, automatic stopping is regulated, whereby excessive increase of fuel pressure due to long-time stop of fuel injection from the fuel injection valve is restrained, and the drive of the fuel injection valve at the time of restarting can be ensured.
