PURPOSE: To make improvements in engine performance, by checking a knocking occurrence with adjustment of ignition timing when knocking occurs, while at the time of shifting the ignition timing to its proper timing, converging it on an optimum acting point according to the octane value of fuel.
CONSTITUTION: A knocking detecting device 5, detecting a knocking occurrence from engine vibrations and so on, is set up in an engine 1, and at the time of knocking detection, ignition timing is compensated so as to be delayed by an ignition timing compensating device 6. On the other hand, at the time of a nonoccurrence of knocking, the ignition timing is compensated so as to be advanced. The ignition timing signal compensated by the said compensating device 6 is outputted to a comparing device 7, and hereat it is compared with optimum ignition timing corresponding to the existing air-fuel ratio read out of a memory device 8 storing an air-fuel ratio to be converged on a variation in the octane value of fuel in advance. And, according to the deviation, the air-fuel ratio is adjusted in a direction where the ignition timing comes near to its optimum ignition timing by an air-fuel ratio adjusting device 9.
