Abstract:

To provide a rich spike control method for optimally reducing NOx in an NOx catalyst in a system having the NOx catalyst for purifying exhaust emission in a lean combustion state such as a cylinder injection engine.

An NOx sensor is installed on the downstream side of the NOx catalyst, and an output value from the NOx sensor is controlled by feedback to a specified value to optimize a rich spike control so as to suppress the exhaust emission of NOx, HC, and CO. Also, the deterioration of the NOx catalyst can be easily determined by determining the output value from the NOx sensor.
