To make the occupant not feel uncomfortable by reducing changes in torque during switching an ignition mode in an engine which is configured to be provided with two ignition plugs and switch between plasma jet ignition and spark ignition in accordance with changes in operation conditions.
Plasma jet ignition that generates high energy is carried out in a region P in which a relatively low load is loaded and a relatively low speed rotation is performed to enhance the ignitibility of a fuel/air mixture and the stability of combustion, while spark ignition is carried out in a region S in which a high load is loaded and high speed rotation is performed to reduce the consumption of the ignition plug and suppress the increase in the consumption of power. In several cycles during a transition between two regions P and S, the ignition mode is switched in only the ignition plug which less contributes to the engine torque by the ignition to carry out both of the plasma jet ignition and the spark ignition.
